New Scouts Blanket Badge – The Shaping Us Framework

We’ve just released an exciting new Blanket Badge in support of the Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood’s Shaping Us Framework, which aims to improve awareness of social and emotional skills in early childhood.

Our new blanket badge supports the framework by raising its profile and facilitating a shared understanding of children’s social and emotional development in their early years. These skills are particularly important for our youngest Scouting section, Squirrels.
What is the Shaping Us Framework?
The Shaping Us Framework focuses on social and emotional development in children, helping them develop key abilities for adulthood, while supporting The Princess of Wales’s goal to foster a happier, healthier society.
Designed to make social and emotional skills accessible for children aged 1–5, the framework enables organisations across the UK to create and deliver projects that prioritise these vital skills for lifelong development.
The final framework includes 30 social and emotional skills grouped into 6 clusters.
What are the 6 skill clusters in The Shaping Us Framework?
The 6 skills clusters are:
  • Know ourselves -  Who we are as individuals
  • Manage our emotions - How we understand, process and manage our emotions
  • Focus our thoughts - How we effectively learn, work and manage life
    • Communicate with others -  How we receive and share feelings, thoughts and information
    • Nurture our relationships - How we get along and build relationships with others
    • Explore the world - How we explore and discover the world around us
How are Scouts supporting The Shaping Us Framework?
Scouts have mapped a selection of relevant programme activities to support the framework against each skill cluster, including:
-> More activities are mapped against their respective skills clusters on the Scout’s website here.
By participating in these activities, young people can develop their social and emotional skills, helping them prepare further for adult life. Also, by wearing the Shaping Us Framework badge, Scouts can demonstrate their pride, commitment to the cause, and start conversations which facilitate open discussions about the importance of emotional and social skills.
