Scouts' Triple Birthday Year
Join Scouts' in celebrating five years of Squirrels, 40 years of Beavers and 110 years of Cubs since they rolled out across the UK.
That’s over 250,000 young people and volunteers all celebrating, making it one of the biggest birthdays ever.
2026 is a big birthday year. In fact, it’s a triple birthday year!
As part of our birthday celebrations, we’ve created a digital “party bag” for volunteers. It includes games, activities, and party ideas to help them celebrate.
To access the resource, volunteers simply need to complete a short form. Birthday Celebrations – Fill out form
The Origins of the Wolf Cubs and Cub Scouts
Cubs began as ‘Wolf Cubs’ in 1916, after a successful pilot programme, and officially became ‘Cub Scouts’ in 1966. What started as a "training squad" in 1910 has grown into the Scouts' biggest section today.
The first 'Wolf Cubs Handbook’ was launched on 29 November 1916, and unlike ‘Scouting for Boys’, which was written for a youth audience, the Wolf Cub Handbook tried to appeal to boys, Cubs and the volunteers. The handbook was closely inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, suggesting games and activities inspired by the stories.
Who are Cubs? Cub Scouts are young people aged 8 to 10½.
