At what age can you start Cubs?

You can start Cubs from the age of 8. Cub Scouts are for children aged 8 to 10½ years.

Develop new skills. Soar to great heights. Being a Cub opens up a whole other world.

What is a Cub Scout

Cub Scouts, often shortened to Cubs, are a section of Scouting for boys and girls aged between eight and ten and a half years old. This section follows on from the Beaver Scouts and precedes the Scout section.

Every week, they gather in groups called Cub Packs to participate in a variety of interesting and challenging activities – achieving whatever they set their minds to, and having a great deal of fun along the way.

Cubs.....

  • Master new skills and try new things
  • Have fun and go on adventures
  • Make friends
  • Are curious about the world around them
  • Help others and make a difference, in their own communities and beyond

The Origins of the Wolf Cubs and Cub Scouts

Cubs began as ‘Wolf Cubs’ in 1916, after a successful pilot programme, and officially became ‘Cub Scouts’ in 1966. What started as a "training squad" in 1910 has grown into the Scouts' biggest section today.

The first 'Wolf Cubs Handbook’ was launched on 29 November 1916, and unlike ‘Scouting for Boys’, which was written for a youth audience, the Wolf Cub Handbook tried to appeal to boys, Cubs and the volunteers. The handbook was closely inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, suggesting games and activities inspired by the stories.
